"Promoting the international affairs of the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg"
In 1986, the state government of Baden-Württemberg made the unique decision to establish an expert division for border region affairs (today: the state agency for cross border cooperation and european affairs). This special agency was housed at the government’s district office in Freiburg and assigned the function of furthering the following aims of the state government:
To intensify and coordinate border area interests along the entire foreign border of Baden-Wuerttemberg, and
To assist in the formulation of local policies effecting the Lake Constance, Hochrhein, and Upper Rhine regions.
The areas of meaningful cooperation with France, Switzerland, and even Austria have been expanding ever since. The agency for cross border cooperation and european affairs also has additional responsibilities, since 2007, that include coordinating the European affairs of the district government in Freiburg. The office is organizationally assigned to the office of the district president and renders support or represents the president in performing the many duties incumbent upon him as a member of numerous trans-national committees.
